Sascha Akhtar, Hertfordshire Rural Living Awards

I am nominating the Good Gardeners community supported agriculture project for the Hertfordshire Rural Living Awards because it is truly astonishing.

Richard Higgins has taken the pioneering work of Sir Albert Howard, the Grandfather of organic farming, and is accomplishing what UK farming is failing at. His HH-2 Horticultural system, which can be scaled up, works the soil in a holistic way that sidesteps the need for expensive ploughing and tillage. He employs no oil-driven machinery and has achieved virtually pest and disease-free crops. He has gained the attention of NorgesVel, CRS, Rothamsted Research, Cranfield, and Warwick University.

Due to his pioneering work, Richard has transformed the soil, previously heavy London clay, into fertile biomass, and there are no slugs, snails, or caterpillars in any of his salad crops or brassicas.

Zahra Anderson, HH-4 Fertiliser

Good Gardeners International’s compost is absolute magic. I wish I had used it from the beginning of the season. But being a cheapskate, I tried making my own and buying rotted manure. The slugs ravaged everything I planted. Finally, I went and bought a 20-kilo bag from them for £20. When I go early morning slug hunting now, I find the slugs in some kind of stupor at the boundary of their compost, which I have put around each plant. They are not dead but in a type of comatose state, and they haven’t ravaged my plants. When I put them in a bucket to release them in the park, they regain their senses. I don’t know how their compost works, but it truly is magic.

It prevents all types of disease and parasites from attacking plants. Next year, I plan to buy a few bags and cover my whole vegetable patch. Its effects last for at least two years if you plant root crops in the second year. That works out cheaper than buying cheap compost every year.

Their composting methods enable village communities to recycle all of their biodegradable waste and turn it into magic compost, which produces abundant pest-free vegetables, trees, and flowers. Unlike the vegetables in supermarkets, which are saturated with harmful pesticides, their vegetables are better than medicine for keeping the body and brain healthy.

Modern-day agriculture is destroying the soil, but the Good Gardeners know how to revive and nourish it. Their method could provide an excellent revenue stream for anyone who appreciates what they are teaching and learns how to make and sell this compost. Those apprenticing with the Good Gardeners could be trained to teach the rest of the world how to revive the soil.

Without this type of technology, we will very soon see food shortages become a major problem. Learning this technology can safeguard communities from such shortages and enable us to enjoy wholesome, healthy, simple living.

We’ve been using the HH-2 Composting System on our farm for over a year, and it has effectively composted various types of waste, including food scraps, compost toilet waste, and even dog waste bags left on our farm’s footpaths.

The heat generated is impressive, consistently reaching over 50°C for 4–5 days, which ensures thorough composting. The resulting compost is of excellent quality, perfect for planting shrubs and trees.

I’m so pleased with the system that I’ve recommended it to a family member who runs a cat nursery and has long struggled with managing large amounts of waste. I am certain the HH-2 system would be a game-changer for them as well.

Out of curiosity, we once added a metal food tin to see what would happen, and remarkably, by the end of the composting cycle, half of the can had decomposed. It’s a testament to the system’s power and efficiency.

What I appreciate most about the system is that it’s completely rat-proof—a crucial feature these days, as rodents seem to be a problem just about everywhere.

Fergus Quinn, Lotus Arts Horticulture

I have been using the HH-2 system for about 8 years. I was initially interested in how it enables the safe production of organic fertilizer in just 90 days using all kinds of organic waste. I bought the system and have used it in various locations, including a large secondary school.

While managing the gardens there, I recycled all the organic waste from both the gardens and kitchens, producing tonnes of fertilizer that transformed the grounds into a lush, garden paradise. The system was also used at Well End Micro Farm for many years, composting waste from a cattery, proving that even unpleasant forms of organic waste can be safely composted and repurposed for planting trees and shrubs.

Richard came and provided an initial quote, returned with sample materials, and answered all our questions. His knowledge is extensive and reliable, and the quote he gave was accurate. The work he and his colleague did was thorough, precise, and well-executed, with no additional costs or delays.

Good Gardening International is much more than just a building, gardening, or landscaping company; their knowledge is their passion. Highly recommended.
