Tom Bradshaw, President of the NFU, was featured in questions on Radio4 about the current state of UK Agriculture today. Many grain crops that were planted in the autumn have been underwater for too long and have now died.
This promts the question The Case for more Hill farming.
As we demonstrate on our hilltop farm in Pontypridd, South Wales we aren’t having a problem with the constant rain through all of January and now through all of February. There is no mud on our farm as we do row cropping with grass paths between the beds; not that we are planting grains yet…but with our HH-2 Agroecological system that is based on contour farming we would advise that this is the best way to farm for continued production in times of excessive rainfall. We are planning on planting grains in our rotation system this year.
