A staple crop, by definition, dominates the major part of our diet and supplies a major proportion of our energy and nutrient needs. If staple crops are threatened by drought, pests or nutrient-poor soils, hunger and poverty can rise dramatically. Staple crops are commodities traded all over the world.
The GGI method
Potato harvests can be increased against water shortages and disease with top soil being increased with good quality compost. Major change could be effected by not spraying off the potato haulm after harvest, with Sulphuric Acid, and using it to make fertiliser/soil conditioner for the next season (as we do). So far this doesn’t happen in mainstream potato production.
