Sugar beet growers are being alerted to leaf miner attacks in crops in some regions. According to the British Beet Research Organisation (BBRO), there is evidence of leaf miner – the larvae of the mangold fly – activity particularly, although not exclusively, in the area around the Wash.
The Mangold fly can be prevented not by new varieties, not by chemicals (as we’ve heard on Radio 4 Farming Today, Mangold fly link) they cannot do it but it can be done by changing soil conditions.
