100 years later… Farming Today

Some of the principles that Howard wrote about 100 years ago are just being talked about in this broadcast of Farming Today.

From the Groundswell event in Hertfordshire

All principles covered by Charlotte Smith were written about by Sir Albert Howard over 100 years ago and have formed the basis of our on-farm consultancy and practice with the GGI.

Diversity, lots of different crops in rotation

Integrating livestock

Protecting soil surface – cover crops etc.,

Min till

Maintain living roots

Charlotte hears something about soil fungi. This is what we have specialised in for 25 years.

Joe Patterson analyses the effect of cover crops that can TAKE THREE YEARS to have an impact on soil quality.

Paul Cherry   Regen Ag.. taking the foot off pedal soil most val. asset on planet. says ploughing is worse than Glyphosate. He says the problem with ORGANIC registration is that ‘IF YOU CAN’T USE GLYPHOSATE THEN YOU HAVE GOT TO PLOUGH’…… ‘ USING GLYPHOSATE IS A LOT LESS HARMFUL THAN TURNING OVER SEVEN INCHES OF SOIL’

Helen Browning admits that the Soil Association is moving away from ploughing and ‘We have a lot to learn from each other’

The reason I lectured to the Soil Association……..she says “WE NEED TO BE GETTING AWAY FROM BOTH PLOUGHING AND GLYPHOSATE AND WE NEED TO BE LOOKING AT SYSTEMS THAT AVOID THE USE OF BOTH AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.”.

Our HH systems are regenerative and avoid both from DAY ONE.

“If your soil is healthy you won’t have any problem from slugs, snails or caterpillars.”  Richard Higgins CEO GGI, HHI., Ltd.,

This is all in Howard’s books from 100 years ago.
